Albert Wohlgemuth.

Beschreibung

Description

After the Austro-Hungarian occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, new religions appear and one of them is Evangelical. First Evangelical municipality (Augsburg and Helvetic) was established in Sarajevo in 1983. A few years after that there is a need for the construction of the sacred building. The project for the Evangelical Church, together with the parish church and the school, did the architect Karl Pařik, probably in 1898/99. The church was built in 1899, and construction continued over the next few years so that by 1905 a rectory was built, and in the same year the Provincial Government donated land west of the church to build a school. Work on the church was performed by building contractor Albert Wohlgemuth.
The church is basically in the form of a cross, and the dome that dominates rises from the cross-section of the bars. On the top of the dome dome is a lantern with tented roof, a tholobate is octagonal, with triforas on each segment. The corners of a tholobate are emphasised with towers, and framed by a series of arcades and pilasters. The main facade is completed with arcade cornice. It is designed in such a way that the wings are used to link the buildings along the bank of the River Miljacka. The variety of historical styles is noticeable; Here Pařik applies elements of neo-Renaissance, Gothic, Romanesque and Byzantine art.
After World War II the building was abandoned and devastated, and later the purpose was changed, so today the Academy of Fine Arts is located here. From the original appearance only the north facade and dome are retained. Inside of the building is divided horizontally based on the project of architects Dobrović and Rosić. With the change of use, alterations and additions after the Second World War, the building has lost its identity.
